Best Coffee for a Moka Pot: A Simple Guide

A moka pot next to Ayni El Tambo bag

A moka pot, or stovetop coffee maker, uses steam pressure to push hot water up through the coffee. The result is a stronger, more intense cup than a cafetière, closer to espresso in feel.

What makes a good coffee for a moka pot?

A moka pot makes a concentrated, full-flavoured cup, so coffees with good body work particularly well. If you like that classic rich moka pot style, a balanced medium roast is an easy place to start.

Which Ayni coffee should I use?

Madrigal and Luna Decaf are our first picks for a moka pot. Both have the body to suit its more concentrated style. Madrigal is especially good if you add milk, and Luna Decaf is ideal if you're cutting back on caffeine but still want a rich, satisfying cup. If you prefer something brighter and fruitier, El Tambo can work too, although it's the one we'd reach for in a pour over first.

How do I make it?

  1. Fill the bottom chamber with water up to just below the safety valve.
  2. Put the filter basket in and fill it with coffee. Level it off, but don't press or tamp it down.
  3. If your moka pot uses a paper filter, place it on top of the coffee.
  4. Screw the top on firmly.
  5. Put it on a medium or low heat. Too much heat is the most common reason moka pot coffee turns bitter.
  6. Take it off the heat as soon as it starts to gurgle, then pour.

Quick questions

Can I use ground coffee in a moka pot? Yes. Our ground coffee is a medium grind, which works in a moka pot and gives a smooth, slightly lighter cup. If you grind your own and like it stronger, go a touch finer than medium. Either way, spoon it in loosely and don't tamp it. Not sure which to choose? Read our guide to whole bean vs ground coffee.

Is a moka pot the same as espresso? No. A moka pot makes strong, concentrated coffee, but it doesn't make espresso in the way an espresso machine does. It has a similar intensity, which is why it's often used for espresso-style drinks at home.

Why does my moka pot coffee taste bitter? Usually the heat is too high, or the pot was left on after it started to gurgle. Try a lower heat and take it off sooner.
